You seem like the DCL expert so, my DH and I are planning on going on a Disney Cruise sometime in 2010 and I want to get a head start on planning- what are the best, least busy times to take a cruise and which cruise would you suggest for first-timers? THX

    Hi Shanna!

When to cruise is and which cruise to take are the biggest decisions that you’ll encounter when embarking on a journey at sea.

Best times to cruise depend on what kind of weather that you hope to enjoy (some passengers want to avoid hot, humid weather), whether you’d like to be aboard during a special event such as holiday festivities, how much you want to spend and/or if you prefer less crowds.

Disney Cruise Line sails at or near capacity on most voyages. You’ll find the largest passenger lists to be around major holidays such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Of course, these voyages also sail at higher price tags.

Least busy times are when schools are in session.  Some guests want to avoid hurricane season. Others like to sail in September and October due to the nice weather (unless a storm is brewing) and often lower cruise rates.

I find January to be a great time to cruise. The ship seems less crowded, the weather can be nice (but not always) and rates are lower. March is probably my favorite month though for smooth sailing and nice weather but it does have higher crowds due to Spring Break guests.

I would suggest the four night cruise. The three night cruise barely allows enough time to get your sea legs. However, the three night is a good way to test the waters if you are unsure of cruising. The four night will give you a relaxing day at sea!
