Welcome, Paul!
Thank you for bringing your important question to planDisney! Disney is known for its inclusive culture, and
Disney Cruise Line is no exception in making their
vacation experiences accessible for guests of many abilities.
You’ll be happy to hear that there are beach wheelchairs available on the beautiful private island of
Disney Castaway Cay! Even better news, these are free for guest use while on island. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis so I highly recommend at least one person in your party disembark the ship early to be sure you have what you need for an amazing beach day together. I like to have breakfast early onboard, overlooking the peaceful island and stunning blue water, before being one of the first guests on island to maximize this special day.
Once you disembark you can either take the path from the ship which is a smooth hard surface, wide enough for a wheelchair and family, or use the accessible trams. There are small groups of these special-equipped wheelchairs to navigate the beach ready for you upon arrival at each tram stop. You’ll find the beach wheelchairs in a Guest Services area safely tucked away from the tram traffic. There is a
map of Castaway Cay at the bottom of this page to help you become familiar with the island – no wayfinding required!
The beach wheelchairs are available at:
- Scuttle’s Cove Tram Stop
- Pelican Point Tram Stop
- Serenity Bay Tram Stop (the area of the island for ages 18-and-older only)
A day at Castaway Cay is pure perfection, with gorgeous views and an array of activities for all ages and abilities. My favorite fun tip to make anyone smile? Lunch is served at Cookies BBQ, Cookies BBQ Too, and Serenity Bay BBQ – help yourself to two chocolate chip cookies from the buffet. Near the drink station you’ll find a soft serve ice cream machine like the ones onboard. Pick your favorite flavor (I love banana) and make an ice cream sandwich! Nothing like it on a warm beach day. They usually clean and close the ice cream machines around 2:00pm so be sure to enjoy this treat before then.
Be sure to download the
Disney Cruise Line Navigator app for the most up-to-date information, maps, menus, and support on your vacation.
Please sail back to planDisney with any questions to help you plan your upcoming cruise!
Bon voyage,
Amy
