I will be sailing on The Dream Tthis week. I notice that it says kids have to wear long pants at dinner. Is this a general statement that covers all cruises? It seems odd to make people, especially kids, wear long pants in a tropical setting.

    Hi, Pam!

Congratulations on your upcoming cruise aboard the beautiful Disney Dream! I returned last week from sailing aboard the ship with my family, and my four children (ages 7-16) have become accustomed to wearing "nice clothes" to dinner on cruises.  They accept it as a custom...just like wearing nice clothes to church or to a special occasion. Plus, the opulent restaurant settings on board the Disney Dream lend itself to more fancy attire.

For our family, I pack one pair of khaki pants for each of my boys and include 2-3 collared shirts -- such as a pull-over golf shirt or a button-up shirt. After a day in the warm sun, they told me that they actually appreciated the long pants and shirt in the air-conditioned restaurants. Of course, one evening they donned their pirate costumes at dinner -- eye patches, hooks and all!

You will most likely also enjoy seeing your entire family dressed up on board since there are plenty of professional photographers around and a plethora of stunning backgrounds, too. There just are so few opportunities these days for families to be together for a picture...especially in their nicest duds. Take advantage and cherish those pictures forever!

Of course, you don't have to dress up to dine in the evening. You can always have a nice casual dinner at Cabanas on Deck 11, or you can stay in your swimsuit and enjoy the quick-service counter restaurants by the pool. Oh yeah and if you really like casual attire...put on your PJs and order room service!

Whatever you decide, you are sure to make memories of a lifetime with your family. Have a wonderful day and a magical vacation. Bon voyage!
