Sailing on the Disney Magic in May. I have medications that are in powdered form and come in a larger package. How would I go about bringing this?

Ahoy there, Katie! Welcome to planDisney.

I bet you’re getting excited to sail on the Disney Magic next month. As your embarkation day nears, you’re probably figuring out last-minute logistics and fine-tuning your packing list. Although I’m a planner when it comes to organizing vacation itineraries and activities, I’m a total procrastinator when it comes to packing! I admire folks who pack early to ensure they’re all ready to go when the vacation starts.

As a nurse practitioner, I am the one in my family making sure everyone has their medications during our time away from home, whether they are over-the-counter medications to treat a headache or my son’s Epi-pen to prevent anaphylaxis to peanuts. Katie, I’d like to assure you that you’re able to bring onboard the medications you need during the duration of your cruise.

Common over-the-counter medications and vitamins or supplements can be brought in a pill box; sometimes a Ziplock bag may do the trick. If you’re bringing a prescription medication, especially if it’s a controlled substance, I highly recommend keeping them stored in its original container with the medication information label. Even if your medication is in powder form in a larger package, you should be able to bring it along especially since it is vital. Just be sure to have the medication information clearly labeled. I would also suggest placing your medication in your carryon bag during embarkation day. That way, if you have issues during security, you can speak with the crew member and let them know it is medication. If you have a doctor’s note, you are also welcome to bring it along.

While you’re onboard, if you need to seek medical attention, please know you can head to the Health Center on Deck 1. Staffed with a doctor and a nurse 24/7, the Health Center can offer non-emergency medical care. Should you need to give yourself injections during your cruise, you can safely dispose your syringes in a sharps container located in your stateroom bathroom.

I hope this information is helpful for you, Katie. If you have more trip-planning questions for us, please don’t hesitate to visit us on planDisney again.

    Bon voyage,

Meet the Panelist: Kiki, California

Greetings! I have been fascinated by the magic of Disney since I was a little girl; now that I am a mother of two, I love watching my children experience Disney Parks through their own eyes. I am also surrounded by fellow Disney-loving nurse friends whom I enjoy quick adults-only Disneyland Resort escapes or Disney Cruise Line voyages with. Whether you are planning your once-in-a-lifetime family trip or a short adults-only getaway to the Happiest Place on Earth, I am here to help!
