I did see some other responses re: substituting an appetizer for a dessert & that it is dependent on the restaurant, but what if it is due to medical issue? Due to gastric bypass, my husband cannot have dessert. A medical card can be provided.

    Hi Kimberly,

Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel, and thank you for your question. While my sweet tooth rivals that of Vanellope von Schweetz (bring on the sugar rush!), my husband is much more of a Judy Hopps (bring on the carrots!). That's one of the wonderful things about a Walt Disney World vacation – we can both find food and treats that we find drool-worthy, even with our wildly different tastes.

Just as you note, substitutions on the Disney Dining Plan are at the discretion of the Cast Member serving you and the restaurant's policies and practices, and can't be guaranteed. In most locations, my husband has either been able to substitute a soup or salad for his dessert or select a less-sugary option for dessert, like a fruit plate or another "light" selection.

Because your husband has a special dietary need, please call Walt Disney World Dining at (407) WDW-DINE to add a note to your dining reservations. If the restaurant knows in advance that there's a Guest requesting a special consideration, it's easier for them to accommodate such requests. The Special Diets team has shared lots of information on their website that you may find helpful as you plan your dining.

When you arrive at a Table Service location, your husband should be sure to share with your server that he has special dietary needs, and he will have the option to speak with the chef to identify safe options. Walt Disney World's nutritionists work hard to ensure that Guests with special diets can be accommodated so they are able to relax and enjoy their vacation.

Bon appétit, Kimberly, and I hope you and your husband have a wonderful time together.

    Wishing you a magical vacation,
    Robyn
