Some of the resort shops say they carry "groceries." Can I expect to find bananas, milk, baby food, a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, and other healthy basics there, or does their definition of groceries mean candy, chips and soda?

Some of the resort shops indeed do carry the basic groceries such as fruits, yogurt, bread and baby needs.  These are the ones that are located close to the villas that have full kitchens since the need for this is greater then those at resorts with no cooking facilities.

If you feel like you will need some specific items I would recommend you considering contacting and ordering through www.gardengrocer. This is a great way to get exactly what you need so you are not risking the resort store being out of what you need or not having the brand you want.  You can see the listing (and it is quite extensive) of the food and non food (diapers, wipes etc) items that they offer on line and make your order very easily on line using a credit card.  You tell them the date you wish the goods to be delivered and the resort and they do the rest!  Remember that resort rooms will either not have any refrigerator (value resorts) or very small ones so do not order an abundance of perishable items unless staying in villas or cabins.
