Kimberly:
I'm a big fan of
Port Orleans: French Quarter. It's theme is spot-on (and I should know because I live in South Mississippi), and I enjoy its smaller footprint in comparison to the other resorts on Disney property. With all that said, however, I would make the move to
Animal Kingdom Lodge without hesitancy. For what sounds like less than a $40-per-day upgrade, you'll have access to a significantly better pool complex that your sons will enjoy--and something tells me that you'll be using it during your June/July visit--a larger room, the Savannah animals, and better restaurant choices.
POFQ is best suited for a romantic visit or for those with young children who don't want a long walk to their room. Its pool area is small and it does not have a table-service restaurant, only a food court. In comparison, AKL's theme is stunning and appropriate for the ages of your boys with access to animal viewing even if you just have a standard room. (Don't miss the outdoor deck near Sanaa, one of its restaurants that boasts a wood-fire oven. The best time is to visit is in the early evening when the temperature cools.) The extra five minutes on the bus to get to AKL is balanced by the multiple stops you'll find the POFQ bus making as it shares a majority of its bus transportation with its next-door sister property, Port Orleans: Riverside, which has multiple bus stops within its resort.
Wishing y'all a magical vacation!
