I had the same reservations a couple of years ago. I was unaware that the park opens to guest about 15 minutes before 9am. We showed up at about 8:50 and there was a very long line of folks waiting to enter the park. Even though we had reservations, we had to wait in line.
The opening ceremony at Animal Kingdom takes place a couple of hundred yards into the park. There is large robe that everyone waits around. Characters come by and welcome everyone to the park and a lucky family gets to drop the robe and officially open the park.
We found the ceremony a bit stressful because we were afraid of missing our breakfast reservations. We end up getting there on time and had a wonderful breakfast.
I would recommend doing the Safari as early in the day as possible. That is when we have found the animals the most active. If you want to see more animals later in the day, I would recommend having dinner at the Animal Kingdom Lodge's
Sanaa. The food is delicious and the views of the animals are breathtaking.
Have fun
Michelle
