I am a very recent breast cancer survivor single mom who wants to take my 9 year old to disney for his birthday Feb 19th. On a very tight budget, can stay up to 5 days or shorter. Would like him to see parade, fireworks and theme parks. suggestions? thanks

    Hi Kim!

Walt Disney World has some great offers going on at the moment. Since you mention a tight budget, you should stay in a Disney Value Resort.  My favorite is Pop Century. I think most 9 year old will love the theming there.

There are two special offers currently for stays between now and 3 June 2010 (but you must book by 27 March). For "Room Only" reservations you can save 25% when you stay 1-4 nights at a Value resort. Save 30% when you stay 5 nights or longer. For "Vacation Package" reservations (room and tickets), you get a Disney Gift Card worth $300.00 when you stay a minimum of 5 nights at a Value resort.

You should also check for specials at  the independent hotels in Downtown Disney. Their website is www.downtowndisneyhotels.com. My favorites of the Downtown Disney hotels are the Hilton and the Double Tree, but they are all nice. If you elect to stay there, just know that they provide their own shuttle buses to the theme parks and they don't operate as frequently as Disney Transportation.

Based on my children, I think your son will enjoy visiting all of the theme parks. I recommend setting aside one day each for the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. My oldest son's favorite park is Animal Kingdom, but he is into thrill rides and he absolutely loves Expedition Everest, the roller coaster there. The Studios also has some great thrill rides. For your 5th day, you could relax at your resort hotel, revisit a favorite park, or visit one of the Disney water parks.  My children really enjoy visiting Typhoon Lagoon . The theming is spectacular and there are a lot of fun things for a 9 year old and his mom to enjoy!

Be sure to pick up a birthday button at your resort hotel or at Guest Relations in any theme park. They alert the Cast Members that you are celebrating your son's birthday. Also be sure to tell Disney when you make your hotel reservation!

    Have a magical vacation!
