Would like to really surprise my 11 yr old daughter and give her a ticket wrapped in a box to take her on Christmas Day. How are the crowds during this week off of school?

    Hi Marie,

It sounds like a really fun Christmas surprise! In fact, a lot of families do this. The crowds from Christmas Day to New Year's are really high. It's probably the most crowded week of the year.

It doesn't mean you can't have a great time, but you'll need to do a lot of planning in advance. For instance, I would suggest starting now to make dining reservations. Guests can book up to 180 days in advance, and they take full advantage of that, especially at this time of year.

If this is your daughter's first time at Walt Disney World, it could be a lot of fun. The parks are beautiful at this time of year. You just have to go knowing that you won't get in all of the attractions that you would get to do at a slower time of year.

If she can afford to miss school, my suggestion would be to take her for a long weekend in January. You still get almost instant gratification, but the crowds are a lot lighter. Just avoid Martin Luther King Day weekend.

Hope this helps. Have a magical vacation!

Meet the Panelist: Diane, Georgia

After spending 25 years in RI, my husband and I relocated to GA with our youngest, who is now in high school. I took my first trip to Walt Disney World when I was 11 and I have traveled many times since then with all different party sizes. From creating our first itinerary as a honeymooner to later creating magical experiences for our multigenerational family gatherings, every aspect of planning a vacation has been pure joy to me.  Learn More About Diane
