I read that people on the meal plan pay around $40 in tips per meal, is that accurate? We are two adults and my 5 yr old son.

I would think that for a family of two adults and one young child, forty dollars in gratuities per meal is quite excessive, Andreina.  But just to be sure, I put together some sample meals at three of Disney's most popular restaurants ('Ohana, Be Our Guest and Chef Mickey's).  Assuming that you don't order extras that are not included on the dining plan (alcoholic beverages and appetizers, for instance) the average 18% gratuity was right around $17.00 per meal.  Even if you do order the occasional glass of wine or beer with dinner, your gratuities still should be well under $40 per meal.  I would plan on about $20 per table service meal, if it were me.  I hope that helps!
