I have read many negative comments about DME luggage delivery. Is it that disorganized that it can take up to 5 hours to get you belongings? Would it just be better to get your own luggage and go catch your bus?

We've used Disney's Magical Express (DME) service several times and have never had our luggage take 5 hours to arrive.  However, even if it did, I'm not sure that disorganized is a fair characterization.  I think that length of time speaks to the heavy travel volume and not the organization of the service.

We just returned from Disney two weeks ago and we used DME.  When we arrived at the resort we grabbed a quick service meal, walked around a bit, and went to the room for a nap.  The luggage arrived while the kids were sleeping - about 2.5 hours after we left the airport.  From our experience, this is a pretty typical lag time.  If you are traveling during an extremely busy time, such as Christmas week, then your wait may be longer.

Your luggage does not travel on the same bus from the airport that you do, so the cast members must pick up luggage from all over the airport, sort out what pieces go to which resort, drive it there, find the owners room assignment, and then bell services delivers.  Given all that handling and sorting, I think they're pretty efficient!

Many people do, however, prefer to retrieve their own luggage.  If you are arriving very late at night I can understand that waiting for luggage delivery would be inconvenient.  Otherwise, we just prefer to skip the hassle.  We travel with 3 little girls and two strollers, so the less we have to carry the better!  We pack in our carry-on bags what we need upon arrival; swimsuits if we want to hit the pool, or water bottles and gear if we plan to head straight to the theme parks.  By the time we return from wherever we've been, our luggage is in the room waiting for us.
