Welcome to planDisney, Lanette!
You've asked a great question about
Savi's Workshop - Handbuilt Lightsabers at
Disney's Hollywood Studios. This was one of my favorite activities throughout
Walt Disney World--it's just such a remarkable experience!
Lanette, you are right in that the age recommendation is 5 years or older. Some of this has to do with the narrative that takes place inside the secret workshop as the Gatherers explain the task at hand. Also, the environment is a bit dark--you have to keep this gem and these supplies hidden from the First Order, of course. Plus, the height of the workspace is elevated, much like any other workbench you'd find here in our own galaxy. Because of all of this, your youngling might need that parental support to craft a lightsaber all their own.
Although you'll be there as an observer, not a builder, some of the decisions to make and assembly of parts might need your Jedi Master skills to complete. When my own padawan constructed his lightsaber, he was 8--the perfect age to bring a young Star Wars fan into the Gatherer's shop. However, he was not the youngest there, so other observer parents were present to help their younglings as well.
Unlike the more lightweight, retractable lightsabers at
Once Upon a Toy at
Disney Springs, or
Tatooine Traders (right next to
Star Tours) those from Savi's Workshop are beautiful, heavy, 31" tall lightsabers, more for collecting and displaying than play. If your little one envisions practicing padawan skills or carrying that saber around the parks, you might want to consider the smaller/lighter version that can be built at these other locations.
Lanette, whichever adventure you choose, I know you'll both enjoy your out-of-this-world experiences throughout
Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge as well as the rest of your Walt Disney World vacation. Core memories are coming your way indeed!
As you plan the rest of your visit to The Most Magical Place on Earth, be sure to send additional questions our way. We love to help!
