I purchased tickets to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. We are planning on spending the day at the Magic Kingdom beforehand. Will we be able to leave the park in the afternoon for a little rest and come back for the party later?

Absolutely Johanna!  You can leave any park at any time of the day and return later with your ticket.  If you do not have a park hopper option then you must return to the same park you started but you are allowed to leave and come back.  Your party ticket is separate to your day ticket and will allow you into the Magic Kingdom for the 7pm party no matter what other park you visited during the day.

Some families enjoy heading to a different park when they have the special event tickets. This way they can enjoy two places on the same day. If this is the only time you will see the Magic Kingdom I would not just use the party time as some attractions will not be operating but it does give you another option!
