If I purchase park passes in 2010 but not come to WDW until 2011 do I need to add the no expirations option or are the tickets not “activated” until their first use (which won’t be till 2011 sometime)?

While this is subject to change, currently your tickets would be "good" until "activated" as you mention upon their first use. If you'd like to verify that more officially closer to your planning/booking time, give Disney a call at (407) 939-1289 or use the form here. Hope this helps!
