At what point during rope dropping a ride would you obtain rider switch passes on the magic band? I’ve seen rope drop lines for the popular rides backed up out of the queue. What is etiquette for allowing people to skip ahead of you in line while scanning?

Hi, Melissa! I'm so glad you brought your question to the Moms Panel, and I'd be more than happy to explain the ins and outs of Rider Switch before your upcoming trip.

Rider Switch is an excellent perk at Walt Disney World for families with young children, and many people hail it as a game-changer. Last summer, the Rider Switch system went digital, but the process is still similar to the previous method, with the exception of the return time window.

If you plan of getting to the Park early and "rope-dropping" a popular attraction, first check with a Cast Member when you enter the attraction's standby queue to see if Rider Switch is offered (take a look at the Rider Switch web page to see a complete list), and make sure your entire traveling party is with you. For attractions such as Avatar Flight of Passage, procedures can change since the line routinely extends further than the entrance, but there is typically a Cast Member near the end of the queue that you can ask.  The Cast Member will scan the MagicBands or tickets of the waiting portion of your group (Party 2) and the Rider Switch entitlements for up to three Guests will show up in the FastPass+ section of your My Disney Experience account. Party 1 will ride while Party 2 waits in a designated area. The return time window for Party 2 will be one hour in length, and it will begin at the current standby wait time minus 10 minutes (for example, if the posted standby wait is 60 minutes, the return window will start in 50 minutes). Party 2 then enters the attraction without having to wait in the standby queue a second time (you will need to scan your MagicBands before you enter the FastPass+ line).

I know this sounds complicated, but it's actually pretty quick and easy, so I don't think many people will pass you in line during the process. Please come back and visit us again at the Moms Panel, Melissa!

Hi, I'm Eean from Pennsylvania!  I may have an unusual name, but my passion for Disney is not unique.  It’s amazing how many people you can find who love talking about, "The Most Magical Place On Earth!"  I'm that mom who always has her ears perked at PTO meetings, in the grocery store aisle, or at middle school basketball games waiting for an opportunity to give someone a planning tip to help make their vacation even more magical.
