Planning our our first trip with our 5 and 2 (will be almost 3) year old for September. All over the place trying to decide where to stay? Convenience versus budget? Wilderness Lodge or Polynesian versus Port Orleans or Key west? How are the buses?

    Hi Melissa!
Your first trip to Walt Disney World will be such a wonderful experience!  Your children are at the perfect age, and September is one of my most favorite times of the year to visit.  I would recommend going to Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.  Children and adults can dress up in costume and trick-or-treat around the Magic Kingdom.  All of the places that you are thinking about staying are fantastic.  Our family loves staying at Port Orleans- Riverside as the rooms are very spacious and can sleep five.  There is a pull out bed under one of the double beds which will be great for one of your children.  All the other resorts you listed are Deluxe resorts.  Disney's Polynesian resort is very beautiful with a South Pacific flare.  You are able to use the monorail to go to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot with is very convenient and fun as well.  Wilderness Lodge will remind you of the West and Yellowstone National Park complete with geysers.  The lodge has a rustic feel with Native American designs.  Old Key West is a Disney Vacation Club resort that you can reserve even if you are not a member.  The studios have a microwave and refrigerator and are more spacious than a regular resort room.  The one bedroom rooms have a full kitchen and washer and dryer.  The resort is nestled among palm trees and streams and will remind you of being in the Florida Keys.  The bus transportation at all the resorts is fantastic and will take you to all the theme parks, Downtown Disney, or water parks.  I have so much more to say but have run out of room.  Please send me a follow up question, Melissa.  I know you will have a magical vacation.
