I am planning my 3 year old son's first trip to Disney. We're purchasing the Disney Dining plan. I was wondering what were the best places to take him for dinner/breakfast for character dining.

Hi Paula!  I just returned in May from a wonderful visit with my 3 year old grandson and can relate our own experiences.

Our favorite character dining experience is Chef Mickey's and have enjoyed both the dinner and the breakfast buffets there.  It is a cheery atmosphere and  we find the buffet food very good with quite a large variety for all tastes!  You will see most of the major Disney characters such as Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and Donald.  These can change but you won't be disappointed no matter who comes to visit!

Another wonderful character experience is the Mickey's Backyard Barbecue in Fort Wilderness. This is quite different from the other options as it is in an open sided pavilion complete with a live country and western band.  The characters come to dance and party and encourage all the children to come out to the dance floor and dance with them.  It is actually the closest character experience the kids can have and they can choose who they want to spend time with for the entire evening.  If you have a more timid child who doesn't like all the craziness they will always have one or two characters who will stand to the side of the dance floor to have a meet and greet as well.  The food is standard barbecue buffet food and was good but with so much going on the kids don't stop long enough to eat much!  There is also some side entertainment during the evening which included a cowboy doing rope tricks etc.  A fun evening!
