We are planning our 1st WDW visit in sept/oct 2012 and plan on staying at one of the deluxe resorts, do we need a car to get around. I will have 2 kids a 4yr old girl and a 9 yr old boy.

Hi Donna! I love that you're getting a head-start planning your 2012 vacation -- you have plenty of time to make sure your first trip to Walt Disney World will be magical!

One of the wonderful perks of staying at a Disney resort hotel is that you do not need a car to travel around Walt Disney World. Disney has a great transportation system of monorails, buses, and boats to take you to and from the parks, Downtown Disney, and the various resorts. Since I live in North Carolina, my family can drive to Disney in a day, so we sometimes have our car with us at Disney World. However, we've found that hopping on a bus, boat, or monorail at our resort is often a quicker and more relaxing way to get to the parks than driving our own car and finding parking. For this reason, we rarely use our car if we have it with us at Disney, and I definitely wouldn't pay for a rental car. (I'd rather spend that money dining at some of the fantastic table-service restaurants at Disney!)

The only time a car can come in handy is when you need to travel from one resort hotel to another for a restaurant reservation or spa appointment. Disney transportation doesn't  generally travel directly between resorts, so to get to a different hotel you have to take Disney transportation to a nearby park and then take a bus from there to the resort. Doing that is more time-consuming than driving yourself, but you can always take a cab if you're in a hurry.

Also, don't forget that Disney's Magical Express provides free transportation between the airport and your Disney resort. You won't even need to retrieve your suitcases at baggage claim -- Disney will do it for you and bring them to your room!

So, plan to let Disney do the driving on your vacation! Donna, come visit me again at the Moms Panel if you need help planning your family's first trip!
