We are planning a WDW vacation for May 2012 to celebrate our son's 4th birthday. First visit. Looking for a hotel that would be fun for them, has a good pool area, not incredably far, and in the moderate resorts? A few deluxe suggestions ok too.

If your son likes pirates, there are incredible pirate-themed rooms at the Caribbean Beach Resort (moderate) & a great pool. Another moderate resort that is close to the Magic Kingdom is the Cabins at Fort Wilderness -- your own little log cabin!  The main pool has also had new features added to it & the resort has many activities going on every day. Also ,this resort is larger, so many guests do rent golf carts to get around, which can be fun for little ones. However, this does add to your overall budget.

I did want to throw out the new Art of Animation resort (opening in May 2012) as an idea. While it is a value resort, it is made up of family suites, & the theming looks jaw-dropping amazing.

When it comes to deluxe resorts, my sons have always really enjoyed staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. How often do you have giraffes & zebras in the backyard of the resort? However, it is a longer bus ride to 3 of the parks. Hands-down the best pool area is the Yacht/Beach Club! These resorts are also within walking distance of both Epcot & Disney's Hollywood Studios. I also have to mention the Contemporary, within walking distance to the Magic Kingdom & a monorail running through the middle of the resort. While these are more costly, WDW often has special offers throughout the year that could make it more an option.
