Hello, We are planning our WDW trip for April 2020 my husband is active military and we are planning on purchasing tickets at the discount rate at the gate. Can we still set up fast pass options or is that something that needs to be done prior to purchase

Welcome to the Disney Parks Moms Panel, Amy! Hello to a fellow military family!

I’m so excited to hear you’re planning a 2020 visit to the Walt Disney World Resort. My family will be there in April too, and we are so excited to spend our spring break with Mickey!

You’ve got a great question, and I’m so glad you came to us. In order to make your FastPass+ selections, each member of your party will need theme park tickets linked to your My Disney Experience account. Here’s what my family does: the Military Promotional Theme Park Tickets can be purchased in advance by visiting your local base’s ticket office, or by contacting Shades of Green, which is the resort for military members located on Walt Disney World Property. Aside from the ability to make FastPass+ selections in advance, there’s another good reason to purchase your tickets in advance: the tickets are tax-free when purchased at Shades of Green or on base, but they will be taxable if you purchase them at a Walt Disney World ticket window.

If you purchase the tickets from Shades of Green, they will send you ticket cards. If you purchase the tickets on base, you’ll likely receive an exchange certificate, which is a kind of card that you will activate when you arrive at Disney. With Military Promotional Tickets, you’ll need to stop by Guest Relations and show your valid and active Military ID along with the exchange certificate or ticket card, and they will auto-magically turn them into active tickets that can be used to enter the theme park. Either way, a ticket or exchange certificate will have a ticket number, which you can enter into your My Disney Experience account in order to link the ticket to your profile. Once that’s done, you’ll be ready to make FastPass+ selections.

Amy, if you stay at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, you’ll be able to make FastPass+ selections 60 days in advance of your check-in date for the length of your visit (up to 10 days). If you’re staying off-property, you’ll be able to make FastPass+ selections 30 days from your visit date.

I definitely recommend purchasing your tickets in advance so you can link them to your account and make FastPass+ selections. For very popular attractions, such as Slinky Dog Dash or Avatar – Flight of Passage, same-day FastPass+ selections are very difficult to get (though I’ve done it – usually with a loud shriek of excitement), and it’s so nice to arrive for your vacation with your plans set so you can dive right into the magic.

Amy, I hope this helps as you plan and dream about your upcoming adventure. Please come back and see us if you have any further questions.

    Wishing you a magical vacation,
