Welcome Rhonda!
I love that you're planning to bring in 2014 at Disney World! I've stayed off property a lot and always had a great time. However, there are perks of staying at a Disney Resort Hotel and being able to take advantage of Extra Magic Hours (EMHs) is one of them. Once evening EMHs begin, only Guests with valid Key to the World Cards from Disney Resort Hotels will be allowed entry to the parks hosting evening EMHs and have access to attractions open during that time.
You can still make later Advance Dining Reservations as long as they begin before EMHs begin. If your meal runs late, you'll just need to make your way to the park exit following your meal.
I think everyone has their favorite theme park to be in for New Year's Eve. I can't think of any place better to bring in the New Year than the Magic Kingdom. However, its the most popular park to bring in the New Year and pretty crowded. The past 2 years, we've brought in the New Year at Disney's Hollywood Studios and had a blast! I answered a question for another Guest about
bringing in the New Year at Disney's Hollywood Studios that may help you.
The average high temperature for Orlando in December is in the low 70s and the average low is in the low 50s. They usually get a little over 2 inches of rain during December. In January both of the averages drop a little and they typically get a little more rain. Keep in mind that these are averages. They may get a couple of really cold days here and there. I always recommend that you check the 10-day forecast before your final packing.
