we are planning to visit WDW in Aug 2011. My husband loves to fish but the excursions are too expensive. Can he fish (catch and release) from either the Wilderness Lodge or can he walk to the campgroung and just fish from the beach?

Hi Christie!  I also love to fish and have had great luck with the Disney fishing excursions but if that doesn't fit into your budget there are other ways to enjoy this sport.

The best bet for your husband is for him to catch a boat that will take him to the Fort Wilderness marina.  From there he can walk or catch a "local" bus to the Bike Barn which is located next to the main swimming pool. It is not a long walk but he does have the bus option that would drop him off across from the trading post that is close to this area.

He can rent poles and purchase bait at the Bike Barn and they will guide him to the areas he will be allowed to fish.  Fishing is not allowed in Bay Lake.  There are many canals that wind their way through the Fort Wilderness area that he might enjoy or he might also enjoy renting a canoe and heading deeper into the canal area where the fishing might be a bit better. As you know it is strictly  "catch and release" fishing on Disney property.

The other location for canal fishing is at Port Orleans Riverside but that is a bit further from the Wilderness Lodge so not quite as convenient.  Click HERE to read about both the guided excursions and the canal fishing.
