Planning a trip for the week between Christmas and New Year with son who will be 4 (he loves the monorail its his favorite thing at Disney). I wondered which resort on the Monorail line would he most enjoy at Christmas.

Hello Tina!  If your son's favorite thing at Disney is the monorails, I would definitely go with the Contemporary.  And a great room location would be in the tower, Bay Lake view on the north side of the Contemporary (the side closer to Magic Kingdom).  When at the resort, your son will be able to watch the monorails come in and out of the Contemporary, watch it load, etc.  My oldest also enjoys watching the monorails and that is our favorite room location at the Contemporary for that very reason.

Another benefit to the Contemporary is you'll be able to walk to/from Magic Kingdom.  You will be vacationing at one of the busiest times of the year and this perk may become valuable if the transportation lines start to back up.

Have a magical vacation!  Diane  :)
