They Are Off; RunDisney

We are planning a trip January , 13-15 2025. Will the crowds be more with runners staying a few days after the races ? We were thinking about the last week of January, but we want to use the skyliner . So my question is do we go the 13th or last week ?

Hi there Amy, and welcome to planDisney!

As someone who personally prefers January at Walt Disney World Resort, there are a few moments during that month where things can definitely vary drastically in terms of how busy it is - and the runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is certainly one of them. In fact, this past January we planned our Disney Wedding dates around this just to avoid any possible traffic, road closures and the thousands of runners and their supporters who descend upon the theme parks to celebrate their achievements!

Since it looks like you'll be visiting on the weekdays, you might find like in our experience this year that there may be quite a few runDisney participants who choose to extend their trip down beyond the weekend but the theme parks gradually became less busy as they triumphantly made their way home. For this reason I'd typically plan to be at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park for the date closest to Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, as we observed that most of the runners tended to congregate at Magic Kingdom Park to take photos with their medals and outfits in front of Cinderella Castle as well as EPCOT to celebrate with their runDisney pals around the world. (Crowd behavior can be unpredictable, so keeping a close eye on the wait times using the My Disney Experience App is often very useful - especially if you have tickets with the Park Hopper option!)

I recently wrote to another guest about the possible refurbishment dates that affect the closure of the Disney Skyliner, and though historically this takes place at the end of January there's really no telling for sure until any announcements are officially made. Mid-January also tends to signal the start of the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts, which will see a spike of activity as local Disney influencers often pack into EPCOT to try all of the new offerings or eagerly wait for the launch of exclusive merchandise and notoriously prized popcorn buckets. You'll also want to be aware of how many folks choose to spend the weekend before Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan 20, 2025 as this did result in greater crowds across the theme parks this past year that certainly brought our standby wait times higher. This was when purchasing Lightning Lane access definitely came in handy!

Personally, in your situation I would wait to see when the Disney Skyliner closure dates are announced (which has typically taken place in October), and aim for the very end of January if possible. This year there was a nice little sweet spot amidst all of the action and I recommend aiming for weekdays above all just to be on the safe side! I hope this helps, Amy - feel free to come back to us here at planDisney as official dates are released for all of the events taking place next January -  and be sure to keep a close eye on the Disney Parks Blog for all the latest and greatest announcements!
