We are planning a trip for 8 to Disney World in June. Can you explain the difference between Genie+ and lightening lanes?

Hi Alan, and welcome to planDisney!

I'm sure that you're already counting down the days to your group's most magical vacation to Walt Disney World Resort. In June, the EPCOT International Flower and Garden Festival will still be in full bloom and Magic Kingdom Park's Happily Ever After fireworks show will bedazzle the night sky. And when it comes to how to maximize your theme park days, having access to Lightning Lanes is the way to go.

If you're familiar with the former FastPass+ queues, essentially, Lightning Lane works in the same way. The Lightning Lane is a queue that will cut down on the time that you would have otherwise spent in an attraction's longer standby queue. Now, let's get into the ways that you can access the Lightning Lane.

First, there's the Disney Genie+ Service. This paid service (the cost varies depending on the day) can be purchased at 7 a.m. on the same day as your theme park visit. You'll be able to select one attraction at a time with a 1-hour arrival window. Once you check into your first Lightning Lane, you can make your next Lightning Lane ride selection in your My Disney Experience app.

Some attractions with a Lightning Lane, like the high-in-demand TRON Lightcycle / Run and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, do not require a Disney Genie+ purchase at all. You use their Lightning Lanes via an à la carte Individual Lightning Lane purchase. It's kind of like a pay-per-ride system. The cost varies by day and by attraction. As locals to the Walt Disney World theme parks, my family loves this service because we can hit those top-tier attractions without long waits on our half-day visits.

AN EXTRA GEM: With the Disney Genie+ Service, most Guests can get up to 3 attractions per day in if they enter the theme park early in the day; however, with a solid list of attraction priorities and a good game plan, Alan, you may be able to utilize a lot more Lightning Lane entrances than that.

I hope that you and your party of 8 have the BEST time this summer! If you have any further Disney vacation planning questions, please revisit us here at planDisney. See ya real soon!

    Magic always,
