We are planning a trip to Disney World this August. We have 2 boys; a 9-year old and a 6-year old with Autism. Both have sensory issues. We are very interested in hearing some of your suggestion for children with ASD.

    Hi Chris!

Thanks for stopping by the Disney Parks Moms Panel. I'm excited to share a few ideas about how to make your two boys' time at Walt Disney World magical! I have an 8-year-old autistic grandson who also has sensory issues. Every child is different but here are a few things we have done when he visits Disney and, by the way, it is his very favorite place in the whole world!

First of all, stop by Guest Services at the front of the Parks to request a Disabilities Access Service card that will allow your entire party to receive a return time for a ride of your choice and avoid the line. Our little guy is happier when his tummy is full so his mom and dad always pack plenty of snacks so they are always prepared. Sunscreen and rain ponchos are a must. With all children visiting Walt Disney World, I usually recommend strollers (or in our grandson's case, a pediatric wheelchair) for any child that can still fit in one. A day at Disney means a lot of walking and it is nice for kids to have a spot to sit down and rest. Because our grandson is sensitive to sound, we always bring along his Ipad and headphones, which keep him calm throughout the day. And one last thing--enjoy every minute. Realize their limitations and rest assured they will have an incredible time no matter how fast or slow you go. Take a break in the shade now and then. It will make the day so much more enjoyable!

Best wishes for a wonderful Walt Disney World vacation!
