Planning 3rd trip to Disney with DH, DDs 11,9,9,2. We always fly, going to drive this year 5/31-6/5. if you have drove from Ohio any recommendations for the long trip? Also can you request early check-in? I think we will be ready for a shower!

Hi, Heather!   After this long winter, all of us in Ohio certainly deserve a vacation in Florida!

I have never personally made the drive to Florida, we always fly.   So I called my parents who have made the drive a few times.   We live in the Cleveland area, and my dad said it was about an 18 hour drive.   If you plan to stop for the night, he suggested the southern portion of South Carolina or northern Georgia.  That was a bit more than half way which didn't leave too much of a drive the following day.

If you plan to drive straight through, most importantly, please be safe!   Take breaks to avoid getting too tired behind the wheel, and letting the kids stretch their legs will keep them from getting cranky.  Since your 2 year old will be in a car seat, he/she will need frequent breaks as they have such limited movement when strapped in.   Make sure to have maps, cell phones, and phone numbers for emergency roadside assistance.

Bring a cooler with bottled water, juice boxes, grapes, and other snacks that aren't too messy.    If you are staying in a value resort, you can use your cooler as a refrigerator in your room.  Ice machines are available throughout the resorts.

To pass the time, old stand-bys work great for my family on road trips:   car bingo, the licence plate game, and I Spy.    Perhaps you can write up some Disney Trivia questions for the kids, this might get them excited for their final destination!

For my kids, you can never go wrong with our portable DVD player, iPods, and Nintendo DS's .  Just remember to bring your car chargers as most of these only have a battery life of a few hours.

Call ahead to (407)W-DISNEY and have them make a note on your reservation that you would like to request early check-in.   While it cannot be guaranteed, they do their best to accommodate when possible.

Have a great trip down to Disney and drive safely!

Meet the Panelist: Cathy, Ohio

Hi, I'm Cathy from Cleveland. I love to travel, especially in the winter to escape the snow and cold of Ohio! My husband and 2 kids share my enthusiasm for travel, so we enjoy our adventures together whether it is hiking at a National Park, sailing on a Disney Cruise Ship, or going to Walt Disney World which is our home away from home. My husband proposed to me in front of Cinderella Castle and we have not stopped visiting ever since! It's a blast helping guests here at planDisney!
