We are planning a trip in August, just wondering when is the best time to buy airfare for that time of year and do the rates drop as it gets closer or should I consider locking in now?

    Hi Shandy!

I start looking at rates as soon as the airline opens up fares for my travel period. Using the September/October time period as a close reference, we booked our flight in mid August last year and got the best deal available.  BUT...you've got to watch the prices, it's almost like playing the stock market...I would say not to book any later than June/July (depending what dates in August you are planning on traveling).

Also, know when you're traveling.  If your return date would be around Labor Day (for example) those rates will be higher than choosing another time to fly.  Another good idea is to check different airlines' fare specials (either by signing up for email notifications or downloading applications such as Southwest Airlines DING!).  They'll alert you to deal that might not be posted on the site.

Keep an eye out on those extra fees as well (for baggage, etc) when comparing, some carriers can cost significantly more once you add on the fees, while others charge little to nothing for checked luggage, etc.  Also make sure you know the airlines policies when booking about refunding or crediting back your money.  Sometimes you can book and find a lower fare a month later and policies differ on how they handle the refund/re-book procedure.

GOOD LUCK!  I always breathe a sigh of relief once our airfare is booked!
