We are planning a trip in Aug 2010 and were wondering if it's more economical to purchase the dining plan with the package or pay out of pocket for our meals. I think the package will save money in the end, but my husband disagrees.

    Hi Heidi,

The Disney Dining Plans can be a great value if your family uses all (or most) of the credits you are allotted as part of your particular package.  If you do, on average, you will spend approximately 30% less than had you paid out of pocket.  On the traditional plan, my family has done very well by using our snack credit for breakfast, counter/quick-service credit for lunch and table service credit for dinner.  We have "done the math" several times, and for the four of us (two adults and two children under age 9) we always make out ahead.

If you have a family of light eaters, plan on eating outside of Disney property (or at restaurants that do not participate in the dining plan) or intend to prepare and eat your own food, it may not make sense for your family.  However, if, like my family, you intend to eat all (or most) of your meals on property, it is a great value in my opinion.

    Have a wonderful trip!
