We are planning a surprise trip to WDW for our 3 & 6 year old. We won't get there until almost midnight and don't want to tell them where we are until they wake up the next morning. Any suggestions on how to surprise them about where we are? Thank you!

    Hi, Kellie!

    What a wonderful surprise!

When we surprised our then 2 and 5 year-olds about heading to Walt Disney World on Christmas morning, we tucked a backpack for each child (left-over back-to-school bags, just $5 at the time, each with a child's favorite Disney character on it) under the tree, filled with goodies for a trip to WDW.

Consider picking up a special character bag per child, filling each in with items that each child can use on this trip. Keep everything Disney-themed, such as coloring pages, autograph books, Disney stickers, Disney fruit snacks, character sunglasses and baseball caps, etc. Once they wake up (already in WDW!) direct them to wherever you've stashed those bags and tell them that the bags are filled with clues about where there are right now. (So exciting!) Ask them "Where do you think kids might need these things? What type of place would these things be really good to have?" They'll get it, maybe with a little coaching...;-)  This will allow you to do all the work before you even leave home, enabling you to get to bed earlier by just placing those bags someplace where they can lie until you're ready for the big reveal.

If you really want to add a little more excitement to it, you could make it a scavenger hunt, too, by printing out pictures (or words, if your older child can read) as clues which lead to each other, eventually ending at the backpacks, or even just a package / envelope with a wonderful color print (downloadable from online) with the words "We are here!" printed on it.

No matter how you decide to surprise them, be sure to have your video camera ready, because this is one reveal you're going to want to watch for years to come! Have a blast planning this surprise; be sure to send more questions as you think of them, too. I'd love to help you plan this most exciting surprise trip to WDW!
