We're planning to go to DSW in summer of 2011. Is it smarter to eat off site, than to purchase the dining plan for our 13, 11, & 9 year olds since we'll have a car? Thank you, we're trying to do the trip on a budget.

Hi, Karen!   There are some great ways to save money on your food bill while on vacation at Disney World.  Let me start by saying I don't recommend leaving property to eat just to save money.   You have already spent a lot of money to be at WDW, it would be a shame to waste any of that time driving off property just to eat.

Here are some ideas for you.  . . Since you will have a car, stop at Publix grocery store before going to your resort.   Pick-up some breakfast bars, bagels, bread, peanut butter, crackers or snacks that won't melt, juice boxes, and bottled water.   If you will be in a Moderate or Deluxe resort, you will have a refrigerator so you can even pick up milk and OJ.

Before you leave for the parks in the morning, have breakfast in your room.  If your family likes their bagels toasted, feel free to use the toasters in your resort's food court.  Make some peanut butter sandwiches and pack these along with some juice boxes and crackers in your tote bag.   These will make a great snack for lunch.

For dinner, make your dining reservations early, around 4:00 p.m.   (The sandwiches will keep tummy's full  until your early dinner!)   On other days, plan on a big buffet lunch around 1:00 p.m. then you will really be full for most of the day then you can grab a light, quick service dinner.

If you do the dining plan, remember that you will have to pay for the Adult Dining Plan for your kids ages 10 and older.  I know you are on a budget, and I just want you to plan accordingly!

Meet the Panelist: Cathy, Ohio

Hi, I'm Cathy from Cleveland. I love to travel, especially in the winter to escape the snow and cold of Ohio! My husband and 2 kids share my enthusiasm for travel, so we enjoy our adventures together whether it is hiking at a National Park, sailing on a Disney Cruise Ship, or going to Walt Disney World which is our home away from home. My husband proposed to me in front of Cinderella Castle and we have not stopped visiting ever since! It's a blast helping guests here at planDisney!
