Planning our first WDW visit in March 2019. I'm planning to carry a small backpack into the parks. How would this work for rides that do not allow personal items? Are their ride attendants to watch your belongings? Can you take belongings on the rides?

Hello Christine and thanks so much for asking the Disney Parks Moms Panel such a super question about visiting the wonder of Walt Disney World Resort this coming March 2019 especially when I hEar it's going to be your 1st ever magical Disney visit!
Do you know that should we ever meet each other within the Disney Parks we'd look just like twins because I always wear a small backpack to carry my daily personal essentials in such as bottled water, sunscreen, sanitiser and lip balm!  Therefore I'm more than happy to share that in my own personal experience of wearing a small backpack whilst enjoying the Disney Parks that many Attractions benefit from small net storage containers on the actual ride vehicle and select Attractions such as Avatar Flight of Passage benefit from small storage boxes directly behind the ride vehicles in which Guests can stow personal belongings or Soarin' Around the World which has net storage containers located underneath the ride seats.
It may also be useful to know each Disney Theme Park benefits from various sizes of Locker Rentals for Guest convenience and can be found near to the entrance of each park.
If I can help further pixie dust your plans to visit during Spring at Walt Disney World Resort please do pop back to ask me another question.
    Have a great Disney day.
