We're planning our first trip to Disney wWorld and I was wondering about dining. Can you exchange the table service on the dining plan for counter service or are there table services that do not require a reservation?

You can not exchange table service meals with counter service meals.  If you think that you won't use all of your table services, you may want to reconsider getting the dining plan.  Due to the popularity of the dining plan, many table service establishments book up really early.  I have found that if I call 407-WDW-DINE often enough I usually get into the restaurants I want.  Since we don't book 180 days in advance we end up eating either early (5pm) or late (7:30).

Here's an example from a trip earlier this year.  We had reservations for lunch at a table service restaurants in Epcot and changed our mind and now wanted to spend the day in Hollywood Studios.  Around 10am I called 407-WDW-DINE and explained our situation.  I said we were open to any restaurant at any time as long as it was within Hollywood Studios.  We got reservations at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater for 2:30.  We grabbed a bag of pretzels and fruit cup around noon and had a fun lunch at 2:30.

In the words of Mrs. Pots, "it will all work out in the end, you'll see"
