We are planning our first Orlando Trip with the kids 07/04-07/11/10. It all feels very overwhelming, our children are 16, 15, 12, & 10. Any suggestions to keep them all happy in MK or is one of the other parks more suitable for the preteens and teens?

Hi, Charlene! Don't let the planning process be overwhelming...enjoy it as an adventure! Sure, there's a lot to do at WDW, but there's something there for everyone! Show your kids the website, order the DVD and some maps, and start making your dining reservations. Make it a memorable experience before you ever leave the house!

I have teens/preteens, and although they do love the Magic Kingdom, they are enjoying Disney's Hollywood Studios, Epcot and Animal Kingdom more as they get older. For a July trip, here are a few tips I suggest for families with teens:

    • It's going to be hot, hot, hot! Yet, since teens/tweens possess the propensity to sleep in, use that to your planning advantage. Let them sleep when it's hot, and play in the parks when the sun goes down. During the summer, the park hours are usually later, and if you're staying on property, then you can take full advantage of Extra Magic Hours.
    • During the day, visit the pool, a water park or Downtown Disney. Then, enjoy a sit-down meal -- timing it so that you're exiting an air-conditioned restaurant as the crowds are thinning and it turns dark!
    • At MK, there are still great thrill rides such as  -- Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain.  Of course, armed with cell phones, my husband and I enjoy letting the big kids go off on their own while we enjoy a quieter pace.
    • At DHS, your teens will love Rock n' Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror while also enjoying Toy Story Mania! (Just get your Fast Passes early in the day!)
    • My big kids also like Mission: Space, Soarin' and Test Track at Epcot, and we rode Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom 5 times in a row during Extra Magic Hours on our spring break!
Enjoy your family and your vacation!  You are going to make precious memories that will last a lifetime. Have a wonderful day and a magical vacation!
