We're planning our first Disney vacation in May with my 3 year old son and his grandmother. Are reservations absolutely necessary for for dining?

There is nothing neater then planning your first vacation to Walt Disney World. I think a great way to start would be to order the free Disney Vacation Planning DVD. This is a great tool to help you decide which resort is best for you and your family, as well as what parks you will enjoy. As for dining reservations, while they are not required, I would highly recommend them. Making a dining reservation is pretty simple and that way you can ensure that you eat where you choose. As you know the parks can get rather busy and your favorite restaurant may be filled. Additionally, the reservations can easily be modified and changed to fit your changing needs. I would suggest that you take the time to make some dining reservations in advance in order to ensure that you have a magical time at the Happiest Place on Earth.
