Hi we are planning a Disney world vacation and will be traveling with myself, husband and our son with autism is there any park service information for children with autism?

Hi Karyn. I see you are visiting Walt Disney World Resort in early December. That is my favorite time of year! You will be in awe of all of the Christmas decorations. It's gorgeous!

I love and appreciate everything Disney does to ensure every Guest has a safe and magical time. There is so much great information for families and Guests with autism or cognitive disabilities on the Walt Disney World Resort website or you can call Disability Services at (407) 560-2547 if you have further questions. In particular, focus on the Disability Access Service if needed.

I love that you are asking this question now as you have plenty of time to prepare for your vacation. As you are able, you and your son might spend some time watching videos about Walt Disney World Resort, theme parks and attractions. My son doesn't have cognitive disabilities but he does get anxious about some of the attractions. We watch videos of attractions he hasn't experienced. It has helped decrease his anxiety and also helped us know that there are some attractions he may not be ready for quite yet.

I'm a former director of an autism clinic so I understand the needs of your son and have helped other families plan their vacations. One mom was most appreciative of 2 tips I shared. The first is that you may want to bring earplugs or headphones with you for your son to wear. The theme parks can be quite noisy and there may be fireworks as well. While the headphones won't eliminate all of the noise, they will make it less intense for him. Also - review the information referenced above for a list of "break areas" so you can get to them quickly if needed.

Thanks so much for your question and please let us know if you need further information as you plan your magical vacation.
