We are planning our 1st cruise to the Bahamas May 2012 when do we need to start the process of getting passports? Also, I am thinking there is one night where we have to dress up What does that mean exactly?? any other advice please tell I have no clue wh

Oh, Ashley -- get ready for adventure, relaxation and unforgettable memories all rolled together in one family vacation! You're going to have a blast aboard Disney Cruise Line next spring.

For me and mine, the hardest part of the US passport application process was finding time to get it all done. There are six of us in our family, and we had a variety of ages and situations.  I had lost my passport and needed a new one; my 16 year-old son needed his driver's license and only one parent before he applied; and the other three kids needed both parents to appear in person. So, take it from me, obtain your applications, read them carefully and bring the supporting documents, fees, photos and people.  Also be aware that there are certain hours in which passport applications are accepted.

Once we applied, it took only a couple of weeks for them to be returned, and we didn't pay the extra handling fee to have them expedited.  However, I'm sure you might can guess that the process can take up to six weeks or longer. So, you might want to get them done this summer so that you have that part of planning over with (and paid for) before the busy fall and holiday season. I am very thankful that we had our passports the last time we cruised. It just makes you feel better in foreign ports knowing that you have the proper identification as a US citizen.

For 3-5 night Bahamian cruises, there is usually one optional "dress up" night where you'll see some guests donning the finest in evening attire, and then others will opt for simply a sportcoat or dress to make the evening feel special. On another evening, there is a Pirates IN the Caribbean Theme Night where piratical attire is the norm -- yep, bandanas, patches and all!

I hope all this helps you plan -- and let me know if I can help answer more questions for you. Have a wonderful day and a magical vacation. Bon voyage!
