We planned a trip to DW to have something fun to remember this year. Unfortunately, I developed cancer and will begin chemo soon. I may not be finished in time (2 months away) - is it difficult to move a trip? Options?

    James:

I am sorry to hear that you are facing cancer and chemo treatment. I am a breast cancer survivor, and I can understand your hesitancy to keep the vacation on the calendar with the uncertainty of when treatment will end.

I don't want to speak out of turn without knowing the specifics of your reservation. If you have a "room-only" reservation, the cancellation policies are different from "package" reservations that include a room, tickets, and even possibly the dining plan. Also, if you booked with a travel agent or an online booking company like Expedia, cancellation policies vary greatly.

If I were in your shoes (and I guess of all the panelists, my situation brings me pretty close), I'd call your booking agent, whether it was Disney or other entity as soon as possible to find out your options. Hopefully, it can be as simple as re-booking at a later date. However, if you are looking at some cancellation fees or worse, a non-refundable vacation, I would strongly encourage you to ask what paperwork would be necessary to show your illness and ask for an exception. I had to make several calls during my cancer treatment to ask for an exception for my illness and on two occasions, the customer service reps were very accommodating and on the third instance, I was simply asked to fax a doctor's note to an airline. One of the best parts of my illness was seeing the compassion of others for my situation, and I hope you will also get to see the same, if needed.

When you feel up to re-booking your trip, come back to us here at the Moms Panel and let us help you plan a good memory maker for your family. Take it from me, you'll all need it and will cherish the time spent together to celebrate your recovery.

My family of 6 appreciates Disney's value! Although Ft. Wilderness is our second home, we've enjoyed the resorts for business, reunions and romantic getaways. For me, Disney also means dining: last count, I'd eaten at 55 restaurants around the World! Learn More About Whitney
