We plan to visit WDW in late September 2012. I understand they have offered a free meal package the last few years in the fall. If we make reservations now and the promotion becomes available later what do we do? or is it safe to wait awhile and see ?

You've chosen a great time of year to visit, Valerie.  We really like visiting in the fall for the lower crowd levels and discounted room rates, not to mention Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party!  As you know, for the last several years, Disney has indeed offered a free dining package for fall guests.  If you were to make reservations now, you'd want to keep a close eye on the special offers page of Disney's website.  When and if free dining is offered (and you are eligible), you'd want to call 407-WDW-STAY and ask the phone agent to apply the discount code to your travel package.  If there is availability it won't be a problem at all.  The only risk you run if you decide to wait and see is that your particular resort may not have availability.  This isn't a huge risk, but it is worth mentioning.  Either way, you'll want to go ahead and make your dining reservations as soon as possible; a change in your package will not automatically cancel your reservations.  I hope that helps, but if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask again!  Enjoy your trip.
