    We plan on a DAS for my 14-year old with autism. My question is, will we still access most rides through an alternate entrance? Even if the standard entrance had a zero wait, she might balk as the alternate entrance is all she knows from the GAC days.

    Hi, Kimberly!  With the Disability Access Services card, there is no longer a need for alternate entrances, as the queues at Walt Disney World can accommodate wheelchairs and electronic convenience vehicles, and the DAS card allows guests to return at a time that will permit them quick access to the attraction.  

    However, in an effort to accommodate guests with special needs in the best way possible, you can assist cast members in helping to provide your daughter with a more magical experience.  When you go into guest services to obtain your Disability Access Services card, don't simply state that your child is autistic.  You may want to spell out specifically the needs of your child.  For example, instead of telling them she is autistic and cannot wait in a general queue, spell out that perhaps she has sensory issues that prevent her from being in a confined area, where she risks others touching her.  This will alert cast members to her specific needs, and they can better provide an accommodation that will help her enjoy the visit as much as she has previously.

    I have found that while the DAS does change the way things are being done since the days of the Guest Assistance Card, the cast members genuinely want your family's experience to be the best it can be.  As much as they can, they will help give your daughter the accommodations she needs.
