I have 1 picky 6 yr old that will usually eat chick nuggets and PB&J. My other child is 3 and can't do an all you can eat buffet. Is it smart to bypass the dining plan? We hope to eat breakfast in our room. Can we use a dining pass for a character meal

Hi Beth - in my opinion, Disney is the best at accommodating picky eaters so I wouldn't rule the out the dining plan based on your picky eater.  It does sound like you want to dine at a character meal.  If you are on a dining plan that includes table service credits, then yes, you can use your plan towards this meal.  I would suggest you take a few minutes to map out where you plan on dining along with the cost of the meal if you were to pay out of pocket.  This cost analysis should help you decide if the dining plan will be a value for you on your upcoming vacation.  If you plan on dining at a table service each day (vs only quick service) then the dining plan may still work out for you.  If you are planning mostly quick service meals and one character dining meal, it might be more cost effective for you to pay out of pocket for your meals.
