my picky eater 13 year old is usually unable to find anything to eat at the restaurants the rest of the family wants to try. Can a burger, Mac and cheese, or pizza or other kid friendly iitems typically be available even if not on the menu? Thanks

Hi, Scott!  While some of your picky eater's favorite foods may not be available on the adult menu, in many cases, your server may be able to offer you a larger portion of a menu item typically available only on the children's menu.  In other cases, they can adapt something on the adult menu to make it more picky palate friendly - like leaving off sauces or certain vegetables from some dishes.

I have vacationed with a friend who would often head to a quick service location to grab dinner for her picky eater, then while the rest of us enjoyed dinner at a location of our choice, she would just have a soup or a dessert.  This is always an option if you can't think of any way a menu adaptation can be made.  At a restaurant that doesn't offer burgers, pizza, or mac and cheese on any menu, you won't be able to order those things, as the ingredients are unlikely to be available in the kitchen.

In our  many vacations, with picky eaters and special dietary requirements, we have always found that everyone in our family has been able to find something on the menu they can eat or that can be adapted to their food requirements.  I hope your experience is the same.

    Happy vacationing!
