Welcome to planDisney Taylor! I’m so glad you stopped by with your question about using Lightning Lane and Rider Switch at
Walt Disney World. I’m excited to help you understand how these systems work together so your family can make the most of your time in the parks while keeping things smooth, stress free, and full of magic!
Rider Switch is designed for families with young children or guests who do not plan to ride but cannot wait outside the queue alone. It allows one adult to wait with the non-riding child while the other adult experiences the attraction, and then the adults swap places without having to wait in the full line again. It’s a really helpful system for families so that everyone gets a chance to ride without doubling the wait time.
Lightning Lane is a paid skip the line option for certain attractions. If one parent purchases a Lightning Lane for a ride and uses Rider Switch, the second parent cannot automatically use that Lightning Lane for free. Each adult who wants to access the Lightning Lane must have their own Lightning Lane purchase. Disney does not combine Rider Switch with Lightning Lane to allow free access for the swapping adult.
In some cases, if you purchase a Lightning Lane for multiple people in your party, the Rider Switch group may be able to enter together, but that still requires a valid Lightning Lane for everyone in that group. If the second parent tries to enter without a purchase, they will not be allowed through the Lightning Lane entrance.
Essentially, Rider Switch and Lightning Lane are separate systems. Rider Switch saves time in the standby line, but it does not give free Lightning Lane access. If you want to use Lightning Lane as part of Rider Switch, you’ll need to purchase it for each adult who wants to ride.
Taylor, I hope this helps you get everything set up for your magical adventure at Walt Disney World Resort! Thank you for visiting planDisney, and have a pixie dusted day!
