Hi Jennifer,
Up until the past few years, we
never went to the water parks and just enjoyed ourselves at the resort pools. The main pool, Ol' Man Island, at Port Orleans Riverside is a large pool with a geyser in the middle as well as a slide. There is also a kiddie pool and spa/jacuzzi. In addition, there are 5 quiet pools throughout the resort; perfect for night swims!
However having now gone to the water parks, our children prefer them. By going when it first opens, the crowds aren't as large, which may be easier for your older son. We've also only done activities where we stay together as a family. Of the 2 water parks, I think
Blizzard Beach is a better match. The wave pool at
Typhoon Lagoon is scary for me. My kids love it, but it very easy to get separated when the waves arrive. I am quite comfortable at the more gentle waves at Melt-Away Bay. Teamboat Springs will fit your entire family so they can ride together. Tobaggan Racers is another attraction where everyone can ride together next to each other in a race. We also love escaping to Cross Country Creek to float along in the lazy river. there are also some kid friendly areas for your youngest. Just an fyi, you can rent private cabanas called Polar Patios at the water parks. While there is costly, it may provide your oldest with a secure place that will be yours for the day as well as additional amenities.
I think if I were you, I'd visit Ol' Man Island first and see how your sons react; if the reaction is positive, then you're probably good to go to stick with the resort pool. Between all the activities of the parks, they may enjoy something a bit more simple right there at the resort.
Thank you for visiting the Moms Panel; I'm happy to help out another mom with 3 sons!
