We are not staying at the Disney properties and our hotel is about 5 minutes away. Do you recommend renting a car or will Uber work?

    Hi Lana,

Welcome back to the Disney Parks Moms Panel! I am so glad to hear from you again.

My family has stayed at the Walt Disney World Resort multiple times, but we’ve also experienced vacations outside of Disney. We’ve rented Good Neighbor Hotels near Disney World, and we’ve also rented vacation homes. While I do prefer staying onsite at the Walt Disney World Resort due to convenience, we have also had fabulous experiences visiting offsite.

When considering renting a car vs. utilizing Uber or Lyft, you must consider a couple of different things, and these are just personal preferences. First, you should consider how you will get to your offsite property. When staying at Walt Disney World Resort, Guests can take advantage of Disney’s Magical Express to transport them from Orlando International Airport to Walt Disney World and back again. Since you will be staying offsite if you don’t rent a car, you will have to call for an Uber or Lyft. Prices for these services will vary based on time of day, demand, and even day of the week. Each time you use Uber or Lyft, you will have to pay for transport each way. Again, prices will depend on the factors mentioned above. One other thing to consider is that at peak times, such as park closing, it may take a bit of time to secure an Uber or Lyft. One of the pros of using Uber or Lyft is that you won’t have to worry about paying for parking or finding a parking spot! I prefer to rent a car as I don’t want to worry about depending on anyone else, but with that being said, I’ve had plenty of successful experiences depending on Uber and Lyft.

One last Disney Mom tip: don’t forget that you can begin making your FastPass+ selections 30 days in advance of your first day at Walt Disney World Resort. FastPass+ selections can be made using the My Disney Experience mobile app.

I hope that you have a magical time!
