We will be going on the 7-Night British Isles Cruise from Southampton in September 2023. Does anybody have suggestions for Port Adventures…what they would recommend or not recommend? Thank you!

    Well ahoy there, John!

Welcome aboard planDisney, I hope you're getting excited about your cruise to northern waters this year! It looks like you'll be going on the 7-Night British Isles Cruise from Southampton on board the Disney Dream, which will also be a great way to celebrate Disney Cruise Line's Silver 25th Anniversary at Sea while you're at it!

As a seasoned sailor of European itineraries, what I love the most about this one is the opportunity to visit so many key historically significant landmarks over the course of a few days via the Port Adventures that are available at each stop. Here are a few of my personal Princely Picks, Tips and Tricks that may help you decide the way that you'd like to explore each destination:

    • There's an interesting irony in being a sailor and having a deep interest in the Titanic, but by starting in Southampton you can really step into its story by venturing around town on the Titanic Trail. When you combine this with a Port Adventure visiting Titanic Belfast, it'll give you a richer understanding and context to this maritime marvel and the human connections that came with it as you cap it off with the Titanic Story Walking Tour in Cork (Cobh).
    • For a very distinctly Disney flair, there is absolutely one Scottish Port Adventure that I would definitely make sure to take aim at during your stop in Greenock. While there are definitely a lot of castles within reach, there's really nothing like going on a Disney Cruise to Scotland and saying you've met Merida herself at Edinburgh Castle. It's one of those very Disney-exclusive experiences that are worth an extra bit of whimsy for fans and families on an itinerary otherwise filled with historical sites.
    • If you're looking for some more adventurous fun in a travel party with a lot of endurance I would recommend a journey out to see the Spectacular Antrim Coast & Giant's Causeway, walking up 130 steps up Blarney Castle and perhaps wait in a very lengthy line to arch back and kiss the fabled stone or even an underground adventure out to the Llechwedd Slate Caverns. (Be sure to get a local to teach you how to pronounce "Llechwedd" properly before you leave!) For these expeditions I wouldn't recommend going with younger party members and opt for the Adult-Only Departures due to the long motorcoach rides and extensive exploring on foot; as I always say on any organized adventures, you'll only be as fast as the slowest member of your group and I personally find that the local guides are often freer to show you more in Adult-Only groups.
Wishing you all the best in however you choose to explore - your Adventure is Out There!
