Welcome back to the Disney Parks Moms Panel, Shelby! I’m so glad you stopped by with your question about the updates to the Rider Switch feature!

My family and I just visited the Walt Disney World Resort last weekend, so I have fresh experience with this! A helpful Cast Member at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at the Magic Kingdom Park explained to me how the new system works.

Scenario: My six-year-old daughter and I have a FastPass+ for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. My husband will wait with our toddler and he will be the one using the Rider Switch pass. We tell the Cast Member about our plan. The Cast Member asks my husband and six-year-old (who will get to enjoy the wildest ride in the wilderness a second time) to tap their bands to the Mickey sensor.

My Daughter and I enjoy the ride, we meet my husband, I take our toddler, and my husband and my oldest head back to the FastPass+ line, where they tap their bands again on the Mickey sensor and they enjoy the ride!

With the changes, the guests who will be using the Rider Switch pass in the second group (maximum of three guests) will have to tap their bands to the sensor when the first group is making the line.

If the wait time for the attraction is 55 minutes, you will have 50 minutes once the first group gets off the attraction, to use your Rider Switch pass.

Shelby, our kids will still get to ride a second time, should they choose to. Something tells me that it would be very rare if they didn’t want to! My advice is to have everyone who will be riding in the second group present so they can tap their bands when the first group is making the line. Otherwise, the system will not associate them with the Rider Switch pass you’ve requested.

I hope this explains the new system! Have a great visit!
