what is the name of the island in Bay Lake and can you go on it?

Hi Aquanita! This secluded island in the middle of Bay Lake at Walt Disney World has quite a history. It is not a man made island. From around 1900-1937 it was called Raz Island for the family who did some farming on it. In the late 1930's it was bought by "Radio Nick" who lived there with his wife. The next owners used it as a hunting club until it was finally bought by Disney in 1965.

It was originally named Blackbeard's Island and remained undeveloped until 1974 when it was renamed Treasure Island. Disney actually added dirt to enlarge the island to about 11 acres. It has always only been accessible by boat and at one time they had a side wheeler cruise that stopped there. Around 1977 they renamed it again to Discovery Island which is the name that remains today. For many years it was a mini type zoo/nature preserve where you could go to visit multiple breeds of birds and tortoises and other fun things.

Today Discovery Island is closed to all guests and only home to native birds who can be seen roosting in the trees each day and night. Guests are not allowed there but it is fun to search for the pirate ship that still remains sunk next to it on one side of the island.
