Dan from North west Asked Please note that experiences, policies, pricing and other offerings are subject to change and may have changed since the date of this answer.

Myself and family are here May 2024. I’ve already purchased Disney park tickets The last time we was here in 2016, we had magic bands and could book time slots for 3 rides per day. What do I need to do this time? Not staying in Disney hotel

Welcome to planDisney, Dan, and welcome back to Walt Disney World Resort. A lot has changed since 2016, so I am especially glad you came to planDisney with your question.

The previous FastPass program has been replaced with Genie. Like the old system, your My Disney Experience App helps you navigate all this program has to offer.

    • Genie is available to all guests. With this feature, you can tell Genie your wishes and the app helps plan your day, drawing upon its awesome powers to know how to maximize your time. You will find this on the app home screen under "Summon Disney Genie" or on your welcome page by selecting "≡" in the bottom right corner of the screen and then selecting "My Disney Genie Day."
    • Genie+ is an add-on feature, most like the FastPass system you are familiar with from your last trip. Genie+ is available for purchase starting at midnight on the day of your park visit. Like the FastPass system, Genie+ allows access to Lightning Lane entry for attractions with a shorter wait than the traditional Standby Line. Unlike FastPasses, you are not limited to only three. Since you are staying outside of Walt Disney World, you can begin selecting your first Lightning Lane attraction when the park opens, and you can reserve additional attractions every two hours or right after enjoying the last Lightning Lane ride you reserved.
    • An entirely new offering is Individual Lightning Lane entries. There are so many new attractions since your last visit, this feature is the best guarantee for some of the newest treasures at the parks, including TRON Lifecycle / Run at Magic Kingdom Park; Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT; and Rise of the Resistance at Disney's Hollywood Studios. With Individual Lightning Lane entry, you select the time you would like to enjoy the attraction at the time you make your purchase.
    • In addition to the Genie suite of cosmic powers, there are also Virtual Queue opportunities to ride TRON and Guardians of the Galaxy. The Virtual Queues open at 7 am for all park guests, regardless of where they wake up that morning. You can check your availability to join a Virtual Queue on the app under "Virtual Queues." Unlike the Individual Lightning Lanes, rather than a purchase, these require only a bit of luck. You can join the queue starting at 7 am, but they fill within seconds. There is a second opportunity at 1 pm, but you do have to be in the same park as the attraction to be eligible. These queues are standby, meaning you get to ride these awesome attractions, but the line will be longer like a Standby Line. Personally, I try for the Virtual Queue at 7 am, and if I am unsuccessful in getting one of those boarding times, I then opt for Individual Lightning Lane entries.

As you are trying to absorb all this information, it can seem daunting, but it is pretty easy to use these tools to manage your day. Although I did like getting my FastPasses ahead of my trip, I have always been able to enjoy so many more attractions with shorter lines by using Genie+.

Please come back to planDisney with any other questions about your upcoming trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth. We love to talk about what's exciting and new and what's still wonderfully the same.
